Sharon
O'Connor

Sharons
first musical experience came at age eight with the clarinet. Throughout high school she
sang in the chorus and participated in musical and dramatic productions.
As an
undergraduate at Allentown College of St. Francis de Sales, Sharon joined the Campus
Ministry Organization, which included an active music ministry. She sang at weekend
liturgies with the folk group, and learned to play the guitar.
A long time fan
of Celtic music, in 1996 she developed an interest in the mandolin and began taking
lessons from H. Jay Webb, the leader of a local musical group. It was Jay who
introduced her to bluegrass music. She alternated between guitar and mandolin
lessons until his death in 1999. For a while, the mandolin didnt receive much
attention until Sue Stude invited Sharon to join the Gospel Vixens. Her playing, voice and
personality is a vital element of Blue Heaven.
The 1918 Gibson
F2 mandolin that she enjoys playing is fondly named "Jay," in memory of Mr. Webb
and his music. |
